How do I Get a
Passport?
The Process
*Note: This information applies to U.S. passports only.*
Getting a passport is typically a straightforward process, as long as you have all the necessary documents. To avoid any last-minute stress, it's best to start the application process well in advance of your trip. The last thing you want while preparing for your mission trip is to worry about whether your passport will arrive on time.
Step 1 - Gather Your Documents
Passport application form: Complete and print it. Do not sign until instructed at the passport office.
Birth certificate: Must be the original or a certified copy. If you don’t have it, request one from the Vital Records office or use an online service. If born outside the U.S., check requirements for naturalized citizens.
Government-issued ID: Your driver’s license works. For minors, a parent’s ID is acceptable.
Photocopies: Make copies of your birth certificate and ID (front and back).
Passport photo: You can take it yourself (check requirements) or have it done at facilities like CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, or Target. A natural smile is allowed.
Payment: Check the fee calculator. Pay by check or money order to "U.S. Department of State." Most facilities also charge a $35 service fee. Confirm accepted payment methods when you make your appointment.
Step 2 - In-Person Appointment
Schedule it - make an appointment at a passport acceptance facility. Usually, this will be a post office near you.
Show up - make sure you are there on time with all your documents ready.
Step 3 - Wait
Check status - You can check the status of your application here.
While you wait - something you can do while waiting: apply for your mission trip! You don't need to have your passport to apply.
